Eat The Street: “Eat Local”

Posted on October 1, 2011

September 30th marked this months Eat The Street. After taking the show on the road, for a crazy installment of Eat The Street in Mililani, this month we are back at home base in Kaka’ako. With Oktoberfest happening right down the street, the event wasnt as packed as it usually was, but as always there was still a great turnout.

This months theme: “Eat Local”.

Collaborating with sponsors Kanu Hawaii and Whole Foods Market for an Eat Local Challenge. encouraging everyone to “eat local” the entire month of September in an effort to build a more sustainable, secure, and healthy local food system. Fresh produce at Eat the Street was provided by Otsuji Farm and given to all the vendors to cook for the event.

On top of each truck offering a desh with local ingrediendts, there were 4 brand new trucks making their debut at the event. The Curb truck, Lava wok, Ono steak, and Otsuji Farm.

Otsuji farm caught my eye first when i walked in, frying up some kale for their “eat local” dish. Sushi slider tempura.

Then it was off to the other new vendors.

Ono steak was serving up some Fresh ono with papaya-mango salsa, along with their classic steak & shrimp combo plate. While next door, The Curb was serving fresh HokiPoki coffee. Real 100% Kona, locally grown and roasted. What a treat. I personally stopped by the curb twice for drinks. (i know, i have a problem. lol)

Lava Wok was serving up their “Lava Rice” (essentially a curry fried rice) and volcano wontons.

But what really caught my eye was a huge sign outside their tean that read, “Soy milk in a bag”. In a bag???, really???, yes. really.

After a brief confused pause, i said what the heck, and gave it a try. Im so glad i did. Idont even particularlly like soy milk, but this was fantastic. I truly hope everyone got a chance to try this. I walked away with my bag-o-milk, some strawberry and creamcheese volcano wontons, and a smile.

Of course, besides the new vendors, there were many of our favorite regulars on hand, serving up fresh, local fare. Kuahiwi Ranch beef tamales from Baja Style, Guava-smoked BBQ pork pizza from Inferno’s,  grass-fed Kulana Beef burgers from Beyond Burgers, and dont forget the Fresh-roasted Kahuku corn from Na’Ono.

We stopped by Grandma G’s for some classic local grinds, done right. Kalua Pork with Otsuji Farms bok choy and choy sum, and Furikake corn.

The Lightsleepers crew Hosted another great Inkspills battle between Ownah and Dodge while keeping the beats as fresh as the produce.

While across the parking lot, the boys from Local Stop hosted a malasada burger eating contes, using their 1lb “Queen Liliuokalani Burger”.

Another great Eat The Street down, and MANY more to come.
