In Response: “King Cake Burger”

Ramen Burger eat your heart out, there’s a new “King” of strange street food: The King Cake Burger
I don’t know how many of our local readers keep up with food truck happenings elsewhere, but we like to keep not of what our friends across the ocean are doing in the mobile food scene. That way when things like the infamous Ramen Burger pop up, we can share that info with you.
I know, there are many out there who look at this culinary creation as the insane ravings of a mad chef with too much MSG in his system. Even just a look at this frankensteinian delight can bring out emotions in foodies to both extremes. Whether you see it as “OOH” or “EWW” is completely subject to the interpretation of the individual.
With that in mind, I might have a little more of a lenient take on the newest bit of strange food news, the “King Cake Burger” from the Food Drunk Food Truck in New Orleans.

I originally came across the King Cake Burger in this Buzzfeed Article last week. Apparently the namesake “King Cake” is a traditional Mardi Gras dessert that the Food Drunk Food Truck took to the next level. They took the concept of this common celebratory treat and stepped it up by incorporating it into a burger.
Essentially its a BBQ Brisket Sandwich with melted Cheddar topped with a bun covered in Icing (yes, as in cake frosting) and Sprinkles.
Much like with the Ramen Burger, or even Hawaii’s own Malasada Burger, I’m sure it’s not for everyone.
There are many Hamburger Purists out there who will tell you that anything beyond ketchup and a pickle and you’ve gone too far, and others who welcome the idea of a more creative take on the American classic. However, you may find even the most eclectic palate shuttering at the idea of a BBQ Melt smothered in a thick layer of sugar paste.

With 2 Ramen Burgers, a few Malasada Burgers and may other “strange” food items literally under my belt, I for one am not really surprised at this food truck creation.
Food Trucks are no stranger to innovation and creating new and interesting menu items. Just look back at the “Korean Taco” of the famous Kogi BBQ Food Truck in L.A. At one time, the idea of putting korean BBQ in a traditionally Mexican preparations sounded crazy to people on both sides. Today it’s seen as a milestone in the new mobile food movement.
I watched as 700 Ramen Burgers were sold hand to hand in just a couple of hours time. All the while, the naysayers were hating on it all over social media.
And I don’t blame either side.
Sure, a BBQ Brisket sandwich topped with a coating of icing and sprinkles on the brioche bun may not be for you., but you cant’ knock it till you try it. Thay are selling over 200 of them daily according to eater.com, so I guess there are people who are interested.
You never know what food trend might take the world by storm.
What do YOU think the next food truck food trend should be?

Got something to say?
